On
March 6, 2004, the 16th
annual Asian Celebration
was held on Main Street
in Isleton, from 10:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Formerly
celebrated as the Chinese
New Year, the event
was modified in recent
years to be more inclusive
of Isleton's diverse
Asian heritage, and
is now held on the first
Saturday of March every
year.
In
the traditions of days
gone by, the Chinese
New Year was celebrated
in downtown Isleton.
Isleton's Main Street
was closed off to traffic,
yielding way to Saturday's
fanciful parade at 11:00am,
with lots of festive
family activities. The
event featured Lion
Dancers in traditional
dress blessing local
businesses, dramatic
martial arts demonstrations,
Japanese Taiko Drums,
rickshaw rides, and
arts and crafts booths.
While firecrackers exploded
in the streets to chase
away evil spirits, visitors
tasted traditional Chinese
cuisine and took rickshaw
rides through Historic
Isleton. We relived
the historical tradition
of Isleton's Chinese
New Year, and celebrated
Isleton's rich heritage.
